I’ve always liked a lot of color. Busy, kaleidoscopes make me feel alive. I was in nirvana when I first visited Gaudi Park in Barcelona. It took me many more years to be brave enough to take a mosaics class. I am an engineer with no artistic ability. That’s what I thought, and it was ok because I was really good at being an engineer…or at least studying it. However, with “retirement” I had more bandwidth to learn new things and the Mosaic Institute, originally in Oakland, was just my speed. It wasn’t until my mother passed away that I really went ahead though. That’s when I really needed the art therapy.
I have progressed somewhat in my art. I’ve done pieces where I’m attaching curved pieces onto flat surfaces (my first piece, Mom’s pot) and others where I am putting flat tiles onto curves surfaces, all the other pots. Of course it’s always easier to put flat onto flat. Most pieces have used fairly thick tiles. I am learning more about cutting glass.
