Even after using Google for MANY years I was hesitant to go all Google all the time. Yes, I’ve had Android phones but I never warmed up to Gmail, beyond needing the account for groups etc. However, I have been transformed. It all started with the idea of a Chromebook and my hesitancy to buy yet another Windows computer full of software that I don’t need.
Then my son broke his laptop and I decided to use him as the Chromebook guinea pig. They are cheap, small and cute. However, you need to use gmail since executable mail clients (like my good friend Thunderbird) won’t run. This didn’t bother Sam as he was always only on gmail, but I’m kastriebel on comcast, sbcglobal and lbl, not gmail…someone got that before me. Anyway, Sam got the Chromebook and I borrowed it a little. They are easy to lend. Everyone has there own Google account and there’s no interaction. I still wasn’t completely convinced since his does not have a touchscreen and the tablets have taught me that I really NEED that. And I still didn’t like gmail, but I started to learn about remote desktop (to attach to that home desktop) and google drive, docs, sheets…all that you really need in the office world.
What really changed me though was the need to get away from ATT’s sbcglobal. We bundled with Comcast at home (really more econamical and simpler) and ATT was letting me access the sbcglobal account but it was getting wonky and making me nervous. It was time to change email addresses. Now this was a long process, and I didn’t really know where I’d end up, but I decided to jump to Chromebook at the same time.. it’s a new year and all. Now were in the third week of the new year and I’m all the way up to sending out my address change emails.
